This proposed example of a Magna Carta argues for a rights-based legal framework for animals, challenging their treatment as property and the limitations of traditional animal welfare law. It proposes an “Animals’ Magna Carta” recognising animals as rights-bearing individuals with rights to life, liberty and freedom from abuse, supported by an Animals’ Advocate. Drawing on cases from the United Kingdom, Canada, India, Israel and Pakistan, the article examines legal personhood, speciesism and the evolving recognition of animals’ legal rights.
